BMI Calculator
Calculate your Body Mass Index using metric or imperial units. Includes WHO and Asian BMI categories.
BMI categories
- WHO standard: Under 18.5 = Underweight, 18.5–24.9 = Normal, 25–29.9 = Overweight, 30+ = Obese
- Asian / Indian: Under 18.5 = Underweight, 18.5–22.9 = Normal, 23–27.4 = Overweight, 27.5+ = Obese
- Asian BMI cutoffs are lower because South Asians have higher body fat % at the same BMI as Caucasians.
Questions
Is BMI accurate for Indians?
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. For Indians, the Asian cutoffs (23 for overweight, 27.5 for obese) are more appropriate than WHO cutoffs because Indians tend to carry more visceral fat at lower BMIs.
What is ideal BMI for an Indian adult?
18.5 to 22.9 using Asian cutoffs. Below 18.5 is underweight, 23–27.4 is overweight, 27.5 and above is obese by Asian standards.
