Depreciation Calculator

Calculate WDV and SLM depreciation for multiple assets. Get a year-wise schedule ready to use in your books and tax returns.

WDV vs SLM

  1. WDV: depreciation is applied on the reducing book value each year. Used for Income Tax Act purposes. Block of assets concept.
  2. SLM: equal depreciation each year (cost minus residual value ÷ useful life). Used for Companies Act / financial statements.
  3. Most assets depreciate faster under WDV in early years, giving a larger tax deduction upfront.
  4. Enter multiple assets — the schedule shows combined and individual depreciation per year.

Questions

What rate should I use for computers?

Under the Income Tax Act, computers and peripherals attract 40% WDV depreciation. Under Companies Act 2013, the useful life is 3 years (SLM rate ~33%).

What about assets purchased mid-year?

Under Income Tax Act, if an asset is used for less than 180 days in the year of purchase, only 50% of the normal depreciation applies. This calculator assumes full-year depreciation for simplicity.

What is residual/salvage value?

The estimated value at the end of the asset's useful life. For Income Tax WDV, depreciation continues until the block is empty. For SLM, depreciation stops when book value equals residual value.
